Marquetry is a painstaking, delicate art, which transforms slender pieces of wood into elegant embroidery, and it's used to decorate a wide variety of objects. At first it was closely tied to wood engraving. Later on, these engravings began to take on a more realistic approach, as craftsmen began to represent landscapes, which enriched the pieces' artistic appeal. Soon, a long line of master artisans had formed which created the basis for development of an art form which has brought Sorrento world fame, and which today represents one of the mainstays of its local economy.
